Amandla! won both the Documentary Audience Award and the Freedom of Expression Award at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. The film received standing ovations, winning over the critics and audience alike. Roger Ebert called Amandla! both "sorrowful and joyous...the widest range of emotion of any film at this year's Sundance" and proclaimed "the music will no doubt inspire a CD to rival "Buena Vista Social Club". Elvis Mitchell of the New York Times called Amandla! a "celebration" and "one of the best films" of the Sundance Film Festival. David Rooney from Variety declares the movie, " ... a stirring account of courage and spirit in the face of unendurable hardship and injustice." The movie will premier in U.S. Theaters in late January 2003.
Amandla!, which means "power" in Xhosa, is a movie made over a ten year period and reveals the critical role that music played in the the struggle against apartheid from 1948 to the 1994 election of Nelson Mandela and the ANC to political power. Amandla! shows how music was not only a unifying force through the forty year struggle, but also a means to inspire and motivate the people to continue resistance. "As filmmakers our goal was to capture the infectious spirit of this music, creating an unforgettable experience for audiences." says director, Lee Hirsch.

Founded by Dave Matthews, manager Coran Capshaw, and two associates - Michael McDonald and Chris Tetzeli - ATO seeks out talented songwriters, musicians and performers for whom there is genuine passion and belief. ATO strives to build career artists. As a truly independent label ATO is steadfast in their commitment to maintaining that focus.
ATO is based in New York and distributes its records through BMG. ATO looks for the label to evolve naturally on an artist-by-artist basis. The priority for the label is that there be sufficient time and attention to develop each artist and each release. There is no timeline, but there is a plan to build the label on the quality of the musicians they work with.

BEN KWELLER'S NEW ALBUM ON MY WAY - IN STORES NOW!
Alt rock singer-songwriter and guitarist Kweller first burst upon the scene as the leader of mid-90s teen grunge outfit Radish, before launching a solo career in the new millennium. Originating from a small southern US town, Kweller was raised in quite a fertile musical environment, as he began playing piano at a very young age, and was inspired by his parents' Beatles records to begin writing his own songs. By the age of 12, Kweller was also playing guitar, and a year later, formed Radish. After issuing an indie EP and an album, they built a large local following. The young trio was signed to PolyGram Records shortly thereafter. Despite high hopes initially, they only managed to issue a lone album for their new label, 1997's Restraining Bolt, before splitting up barely two years later.
Kweller relocated to Brooklyn, New York, where his musical style began reflecting the area's burgeoning anti-folk scene. Opening gigs for renowned artists such as Evan Dando, Juliana Hatfield, Jeff Tweedy, Eels, and Dashboard Confessional followed, which led to a self-issued solo debut in 2000, Freak Out, It's Ben Kweller. Signing on with the ATO label shortly afterwards, Kweller issued a five-track EP of demos, EP Phone Home, and in 2002, his critically acclaimed second album, Sha Sha.

My Morning Jacket is a five-piece band from Louisville, KY, built solidly around the vocal and song writing talent of group leader Jim James. Their sound is lonesome, haunting, almost classic country at times, and that voice -- Jim James' voice shares the same section of that old country highway with the familiar sounds of Neil Young, yet sounds right at home here in the world of independent American pop music, alongside contemporary singers like the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and Galaxie 500's Dean Wareham.
My Morning Jacket weaves songs and sounds together perfectly -- underneath the big open sky filled with bright stars of course -- never allowing the heavy reverb (and the reverb is definitely heavy) to subtract anything from the visual lyrics, or from the simple beauty of the songs themselves. The band released their debut on Darla Records in 1999, the critically acclaimed The Tennessee Fire, and found themselves gaining popularity not only in the United States, but in Europe as well; the Benelux countries being particularly fond of My Morning Jacket. They have logged many tours of Belgium and the Netherlands and have been the subject of a Dutch documentary film.
The band's second album, At Dawn, finds My Morning Jacket virtually unchanged on record, with more of the same high-quality writing: hauntingly beautiful melodies all drenched with that (by now) familiar reverb and featuring that unique and emotive voice. Their live shows and new music have increasingly become bigger, more powerful and more all out rock-and-roll blow-outs, while still keeping in touch with the haunting melodies that they have started to become known for. My Morning Jacket lives in a world of wide-open spaces covered with a velvet sky, not alt-country, not indie rock, just beautifly classic Americana music.

On April 20, ATO Records will release the eagerly awaited new studio album from Patty Griffin entitled Impossible Dream. From the new CD's sultry opening track, 'Love Throws A Line' to the soaring 'Top of the World,' the album is Patty's most poignant set of songs to date. Its intuitive songwriting promises to further cement Griffin's reputation as one of the most formidable lyricists of her time. Artists including Bette Midler, the Dixie Chicks, Martina McBride and Emmylou Harris have covered her songs on their most recent albums.
Impossible Dream was produced by fellow Austin based musician Craig Ross (Lisa Germano/David Garza) at the city's Small Festival Balls and Wire Recording studios. Patty chose him because, 'Craig is one of the most gifted artist I know.' In addition to Patty on guitars, vocals and piano, the album features Doug Lancio on guitars, Michael Ramos on trumpet, Jon Greene and Brady Blades on drums, J.D. Foster on bass, Ian Maclagen on piano and
Wurlitzer, and Lisa Germano on violin. Emmylou Harris, Craig Ross and Buddy & Julie Miller provide additional vocals.
Over the past seven years, Patty Griffin has created an ever-widening circle of fans with her distinctive voice. Rolling Stone called it 'an amazing instrument.' After her sparse and acoustic 1996 debut, Living With Ghosts, artists began covering Patty's songs immediately. In 1997, she released her rocking follow-up, Flaming Red, earning her the reputation for successfully exploring varied genres of music. In 2002, Patty offered an eclectic mix of stripped down recordings with her Grammy-nominated 1000 Kisses which the Chicago Sun Times said, 'features all of Griffin's hallmarks: finely wrought tales of compelling characters, emotionally charged vocals and memorable melodies.'
